The invention finds application in the treatment of polluted waters regardless of their origin, in particular industrial waste waters from metallurgical, ore mining and dressing plants. A high level of water purification is achieved as well as of separation of the solid and fluid phases in the process. The installation is compact, easy to control and with low energy consumption. Failures are avoided caused by the high level of the incoming waters. The method comprises preliminary neutralization of the waters up to at least 5-5,5 pH, averaging, followed by chemical treatment with ferrichloride, calcium hydroxide and flocculent consecutively fed during stirring. The next step is sedimentation of the pulp and separation of the limpid water. The pulp is filtered up to separation of the solid phase, and the clear water is led to a natural water basin. The installation comprises a water-intake structure (1) with an intake compartment (5), a trench sand catcher (7), an intermediate chamber (10) and a dry chamber (30), and an averaging reservoir (2). A buffer reservoir (37) is connected to the latter. The averaging reservoir is connected through at least one pump (11) to a multichamber reactor (12). It feeds a radial settling tank (3), which is connected to a reactor (17) through an intake cone (13) with a filter press (15) at its bottom and through a circular spillway (16). After that, there is a control reservoir (18) where the outlet (4) is situated to the natural basin.
